Our Story

Ebenezer Rehabilitation Centre

On September 12, 1988, Hurricane Gilbert devastated Mandeville, leaving our most vulnerable citizens—the mentally ill and homeless—without shelter or support. This tragedy sparked a movement of compassion that would transform countless lives. Following a prayer vigil led by Governor General Howard Cooke and the Mandeville Ministers' Fraternal, the Community of Concerned Citizens emerged, founded by Rev. Neville Neil. Together with Mental Health Nurse Mavis Francis and retired Mental Health Social Worker Joyce Powell, they secured permission from the Manchester Parish Council to renovate an old building at Grey Ground for those in desperate need. Through the collective efforts of Food for the Poor, Jamaica Social Investment Fund, Southern Regional Health Authority, and our generous community, Ebenezer Home opened its doors on November 22, 2000, inaugurated by Prime Minister P.J. Patterson.
Ebenezer Rehabilitation Centre is a registered charitable organization providing specialized residential care for men facing mental illness, homelessness, and addiction. As we approach our 25th anniversary in 2025, we remain the only facility of our kind in central Jamaica, offering comprehensive dual diagnosis treatment in a therapeutic community setting. We currently care for 23 residents, with plans for expansion to help more men in crisis. Beyond residential care, we serve as a drop-in centre for those needing meals, showers, clothing, or medical attention.
Our flagship programme addresses both substance addiction and mental health disorders simultaneously—a critical approach since these conditions often occur together. We treat various conditions including:
  • Schizoaffective Disorder & Schizophrenia
  • Bipolar Disorder & Depression
  • Substance and Alcohol Abuse
  • Co-occurring disorders
